In the modern world, the beauty industry has gained frantic momentum. Every month, dozens of new shampoos, balms, and masks appear on the market, whose manufacturers guarantee in their advertising slogans: “Our composition is perfect!”, “No harmful substances!”, “Your hair will become healthy!”. We, as consumers, believe and buy, dreaming of Hollywood shine.
Unfortunately, my journalistic experience suggests: advertising rarely tells the truth. Even in expensive products, components are often hidden that are capable of not just spoiling your “beauty pride,” but also genuinely harming your health. My task today is to help you become a true detective who knows the enemy by sight and is ready to identify it on the label.
Blacklist: Seven Ingredients that “Kill” Follicles
Here is just a small list of the most toxic ingredients that must be added to your personal blacklist. This is a real shortlist of chemicals that is worth knowing by heart.
- Diethanolamine (DEA)
- Phthalates
- LAS-Tenside (LAS-Surfactant)
- Benzene
- Propylene Glycol
- Parabens
- Triclosan
These substances destroy hair follicles, hinder natural growth, making strands brittle and fragile. Be sure to check the label for the presence of these toxins, as they are a direct path to worsening the condition of your hair.
Expiration Date as a Red Flag
Also, pay attention to the shelf life of the product. If the package indicates a shelf life exceeding two years (on average, the safe term for shampoo is 1–2 years), do not buy this product. This is almost a guarantee that the composition contains chemical “long-livers” from our shortlist that allow the product to be stored forever but do not benefit you.

Silicones: How “Temporary Shine” Turns into a Problem
Many love silicones for the instant visual effect: hair looks smooth, manageable, and shiny. But this is just a mask. Silicones have an insidious property: they accumulate on the skin, clog pores, and disrupt microcirculation in the scalp. They literally “suffocate” the hair follicle.
Enemy of Microcirculation: How to Identify Silicone
Carefully study the description on the label before buying. If you see these names in the composition, feel free to return the product to the shelf, as they are guaranteed to worsen the health of the hair follicle:
- Methikone
- Cyclomethikone
- Dimethicone Cetyl
- Behenoxy Dimethicone
- Amodimethicone
- Stearoxy Dimethicone
Dangerous “Foamers” and Formaldehyde Traps
We are all accustomed to thick foam when washing our hair. This is created by surfactants (Surface-Active Agents), which clean from dirt. But among them, there are those to be wary of, as they possess carcinogenic properties.
Sulfates: Carcinogens in Your Foam
Pay special attention to these two components:
- Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
They clean excellently, but they are powerful chemicals that should be avoided.
Formaldehyde: A Preservative that Causes Allergies
No shampoo today is complete without preservatives, but some of them can be extremely dangerous to health. We are talking about formaldehyde compounds, which belong to the class of highly dangerous chemicals:
- DMDM Hydantoin diazolidinyl urea
- Imidazalidol urea
- Sodium hydroxymethylglycinate
- N-(Hydroxymethyl) glycine
- Quaternium-15
Formaldehyde is very harmful to mucous membranes and skin and is a frequent catalyst for allergic reactions.
Parabens and Hairsprays: A Double Blow to the Skin and Structure
Parabens and styling products deserve special attention.
Aggressive Parabens that Dry the Skin
Parabens are aggressive substances that are very effective at removing dirt. However, they have an unpleasant side effect: they dissolve and remove lipid substances from the skin surface. As a result, the skin dries out, becomes severely irritated and, paradoxically, gets dirty faster. Because of this, you wash your hair more often, creating a vicious circle.
Hairspray: Alcohol, Resins, and Plasticizers
If you use hairspray often, remember the three main threats:
- Alcohol. It dries out the hair and stimulates hair loss. Since the content norm of alcohol is not regulatory, manufacturers add it at their discretion.
- Film-forming substances (resins). They clog the pores of the scalp, which can lead to a malfunction of the sebaceous glands.
- Plasticizers. They directly destroy the structure of the hair.
If you cannot give up styling, try to buy the safest products.
Our hair is not just part of an image. It is an indicator of the overall condition of the body and one of the main components of aesthetic appearance. I urge you: do not save money on shampoos and other care products. Healthy, strong hair is worth carefully reading labels and choosing consciously, refusing dangerous chemical components. Your choice today affects the health of tomorrow.
