Why Do Your Eyes Sting When Working in the Dark: How to Protect Your Vision with Candles

Навіть у найскладніших умовах українці продовжують працювати й навчатися за комп'ютерами та гаджетами, і ми розповімо, як мінімізувати шкоду для очей, коли немає світла.

A bright screen in complete darkness: unfortunately, this picture has become commonplace for many Ukrainians. We continue to hold our economic and educational front, working or studying despite the circumstances. However, our eyes are the organ that finds it hardest to adapt to constant changes in lighting. If you feel discomfort, stinging, or excessive fatigue after prolonged sitting at a gadget in the twilight, know that this is not an accident but an alarm signal, according to MODISTA.

We often do not think about how important quality light is for our vision. In the dark, our eyes are forced to work to the limit of their capabilities, trying to focus on a bright screen. Ophthalmic surgeon Tetyana Manoylo shared valuable advice, explaining why lighting is crucial and how we can protect our vision when light has become a deficit.

What Threatens Working With Gadgets In Complete Darkness

We perceive the world around us thanks to sun rays reflecting off objects. When there is no natural light, artificial lighting takes over its function: lamps, flashlights, candles, nightlights. Many people are afraid of the radiation from smartphone or computer screens, but in reality, modern gadgets do not worsen vision with their light.

The real problem is completely different: physiologically, it is unnatural for our eye to look at a brightly shining light source in a dark space. According to Dr. Manoylo, this extremely exhausts the retinal pigment epithelium. What is the result of such work?

  • Severe visual fatigue occurs.
  • Concentration decreases.
  • Overall work efficiency drops.

It is obvious that the lack of light only exacerbates this problem. This is especially true for people who already have existing vision impairments, such as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. It is critically important for such patients to have corrected vision—with glasses or contact lenses. Otherwise, they will have to put even more effort into focusing their gaze on the screen, which is a direct path to long-term deterioration of visual acuity, headaches, and decreased performance.

Ophthalmologists tirelessly remind us: working with any screens should be done in a well-lit room. This is necessary so that the light rays are evenly scattered across the retina, and our visual muscle does not overstrain.

Why Do Eyes Sting During Long Work In Front of a Screen

One of the most unpleasant sensations that arises when we sit for a long time at a computer in the dark is stinging in the eyes. Ophthalmic surgeon Tetyana Manoylo explains that the reason for this discomfort lies in the over-drying of the eye’s tear film.

The tear film acts as a protective barrier, shielding the eye from the effects of the external environment. It is renewed every time we blink. When we concentrate on the screen, the frequency of our blinking significantly decreases. As a result, the tear film breaks in less than ten seconds, exposing the surface of the eye.

In such a vulnerable state, the eye becomes sensitive to the slightest irritants: dry, polluted air, or even a light wind, which can cause tearing. In the long term, this threatens the development of the so-called dry eye disease.

To combat dryness, it is usually advised to humidify the air in the room. However, in conditions of constant energy saving, this is not always possible. Fortunately, there is an effective alternative. Dr. Manoylo suggests using moisturizing eye drops, known as “artificial tears.” This is quick and affordable help for our tired eyes.

How to Secure Your Vision When Working Without Light

The ideal scenario, of course, is to avoid working in the dark and perform your tasks with natural or quality artificial lighting. But if there is no choice, we must remember a few simple but very important rules for ourselves and our children.

Rules for Safe Work with Gadgets in the Dark:

  1. Eye Moisturization. Use moisturizing drops (“artificial tears”) to compensate for dryness. Important: children should only use them as prescribed by an ophthalmologist.
  2. Regular Breaks and Exercises. Take five-minute breaks for eye exercises every hour. This will help relieve tension from the eye muscles.
  3. Correct Distance. Look at the screen from a distance of 60–80 cm from your face. Do not lean in too close.
  4. Lens Hygiene. If you wear contact lenses, strictly adhere to hygiene rules, as tired eyes are more prone to irritation and infection.
  5. Balanced Nutrition. Vision needs “building materials.” Enrich your diet with vegetables, fruits, berries, oil, fish, nuts, and seeds. In contrast, fast food and convenience foods should be removed from the menu as much as possible.
  6. Avoid Reading in the Dark. Even if you have a flashlight, reading in complete darkness creates an additional load.
  7. Additional Light. Take care of an autonomous light source, such as a battery-powered lamp. Even weak scattered light in the room will reduce the contrast between the bright screen and the dark background.

If you experience constant discomfort, worsening vision, or severe headaches while working at the computer, do not postpone a visit to an ophthalmologist. A specialist will help correctly diagnose the problem and prescribe vision correction or treatment. By the way, the widespread fear that wearing glasses “causes addiction” and worsens vision is just a myth debunked by doctors. On the contrary, proper correction helps preserve vision.
