With the arrival of cold weather, we once again take out our favorite jackets and puffer jackets so that they warm us in bad weather. But along with the warmth comes the eternal autumn problem – greasy spots: on the collar, cuffs, and near the pockets. This is not just dirt; it is a mixture of skin oil, dust, and cosmetics that eats into the fabric.
I know how annoying it is. You wash the item, but the persistent, unpleasant marks still remain, often turning into streaks that spoil the entire look. Ordinary laundry detergent is powerless here. Fortunately, there is one reliable, time-tested life hack that helps to selectively “disarm” these local contaminations, and only then send the item to the washing machine.
The Secret Solution for Cleaning Jackets: Ingredients and Proportions
This method requires only two components that are always at hand. They work in synergy: one breaks down grease, and the other helps to “capture” it and prevent it from spreading over the fabric.
Preparing the “Cleaning Attack”
What we need:
- Ammonia (ammonium hydroxide): two tablespoons. It perfectly copes with dissolving fatty deposits.
- Dish soap (gel): two tablespoons. Its function is to bind the dissolved dirt and prevent the appearance of unpleasant streaks on the surface.
! Important: If you have an expensive or delicate fabric and are worried about how it will react, make a more diluted, mild solution: one teaspoon of each component per 100 ml of plain water. Always test the mixture on an inconspicuous area of the jacket.

How to Apply the Solution to Remove Greasiness
After our magic solution is ready, we act as carefully as possible, because our goal is to clean only the top layer, without allowing the filler to get too wet.
Spot Application and Action
- Application: Take the soft side of a regular kitchen sponge or a clean cloth. Lightly dip it into the prepared mixture.
- Processing: Gently, with light movements, apply the solution exclusively to the most problematic areas: the collar, inner cuffs, areas near the pockets, and shiny (greasy) parts of the sleeves. There is no need to rub with force!
- Waiting: Leave the product to work. 5 to 15 minutes is enough for the ammonia to do its job.
After this, attention, we do not rinse the product! The item immediately goes for the main wash.
Proper Washing and Drying of a Puffer Jacket: Expert Tips
We have neutralized the local stains. Now we move on to the full cycle, which requires attention to detail so as not to spoil the filler and avoid streaks.
Preparation for the Washing Machine
- Study the Label: Always check the manufacturer’s recommendations before loading the item. Usually, jackets and puffer jackets are washed at a temperature of 30°C to 40°C in the “Delicate wash” or “Down/Winter items” mode.
- Choosing a Detergent: Forget about regular powder! Use a liquid detergent, a special gel for puffer jackets, or capsules. They rinse out better.
- No Conditioner: Conditioner can leave marks, and more importantly, it worsens the water-repellent and thermal properties of the down.
Life Hack Against Filler Clumping
To prevent the inner filler (synthetic padding or down) from clumping into uncomfortable lumps, use a proven trick: put special washing balls or regular tennis balls into the washing machine drum. Some experts also advise a silicone mat. They will “fluff up” the filler during rotation.
Final Spin and Drying
After the washing cycle is complete, use one more trick:
- Towel: Add a large and dry terry towel to the drum.
- Additional Spin: Start the spin cycle (at minimum revolutions!). The towel will absorb the main part of the water from the filler. This will significantly reduce the drying time and minimize the risk of water stains.
- Drying: Dry the item only in a well-ventilated room. You can lay it horizontally on a drying rack or hang it on wide hangers.
- Avoid Heaters: It is forbidden to dry on a radiator, near heaters, or under direct sunlight – this can damage the fabric and overdry the down.
- Periodic Kneading: While the jacket is drying, periodically shake it and knead the filler with your hands. This will help the down or synthetic padding distribute evenly.
Stubborn greasy stains on the collar and sleeves are not a verdict, but only a temporary obstacle. Thanks to a simple and inexpensive solution based on ammonia and dish soap, you can restore your favorite jacket or puffer jacket to a look as if it were fresh from the boutique. Remember the delicate wash mode and proper drying with balls, and your outerwear will be perfectly clean, warm, and streak-free throughout the season!
P.S. If the product is very expensive, has a complex cut or filler, and you are not confident in your own abilities — it is always better not to risk it and turn to professionals at a dry cleaner’s.
