It seems that both names are firmly rooted in our language, but is there any difference between them? And why do we even use two names for the same product? This is a question that has not only a linguistic but also a historical background.

Today, we will uncover this botanical mystery. You will be surprised to learn that there is no biological difference between them! They refer to the exact same plant, which is known in the scientific world as Juglans regia. However, the reasons for its double name lie in ancient trade routes, cultural connections, and translation inaccuracies that eventually became firmly embedded in our everyday language.


Where the “Feet Grow From”: The Etymology of Greek and Walnut Names

The true homeland of this nut is Central and Southwest Asia. It was from there, from the mountain slopes and fertile valleys, that this amazing plant began its victorious march across the world.

Why was it called “Greek”?

The name “Greek nut” has nothing to do with its actual place of origin. It is associated exclusively with logistics. When these nuts arrived in Europe, they came specifically through Greece — one of the key centers of ancient trade. Greeks brought them from Persia (modern Iran), where they were highly valued for their taste and medicinal properties, and were called, by the way, Persian nuts. But for the Europeans receiving the goods, Greece became the associative point of reference. Thus, the name “Greek nut” stuck.

In addition, as the linguist Oleksandr Ponomariv rightly pointed out, the name “грецький горіх” (Greek nut) is a direct, and some consider it a calque, translation of the Russian “грецкий орех”. This same logic, linking botanical names with ethnonyms, works in the case of our “buckwheat” (гречка, a groat with roots associated with the Greeks).

What does “Walnut” mean?

In the Ukrainian language, if we focus on academic sources and classical literature (recall, for example, I. Nechuy-Levytsky: “Around the house grew old gigantic волоські горіхи (walnuts)”), the more normative and common name is волоський горіх (walnut).

This name is associated with the “Volokhs” — the medieval population that lived in the Danube region and Transylvania. These people were important trade intermediaries, delivering goods from the East to the West. Therefore, for the Slavic peoples, the nuts arriving from the “Volokh lands” became walnuts.

Summary: Although we may use both variants in colloquial speech, and “Greek nut” may even refer to certain varieties that are indeed grown in Greece, the term волоський горіх (walnut) remains the more correct, literary, and widely used term for Juglans regia in Ukraine.
