HOW TO SAVE ROSES IN WINTER: 4 proven methods to prevent bushes from freezing

Королівські квіти вимагають особливої уваги до зимівлі: ми розповімо, як захистити улюблені кущі від лютих морозів та надмірної вологи, щоб навесні вони знову буяли.

I often encounter stories where even experienced gardeners lose their beloved roses after the very first snowy and frosty winter. It would seem they did everything according to the instructions, but the bushes still froze or, even worse, rotted/became damp. And all because there is a key point in preparing for the cold: do not overdo it with early covering. Roses need a certain “hardening” before sleeping, not greenhouse conditions when it is still autumn outside.

How to properly prune roses after flowering, read in the MODISTA material.

The true science of preserving the queen of the garden lies in providing her with a dry, breathable, and timely shelter. I will share with you tips proven by journalistic experience on how to prepare your roses for the harshest trials and guarantee them a safe wintering.

Preparing the bushes in advance: how to correctly end the season

In fact, preparation for frosts begins not in November, but much earlier. To prevent the plant from giving new, weak shoots that will definitely not survive the cold, experienced gardeners recommend in August-September stop any fertilization. This is a signal for the rose: time to prepare for rest.

Another important step is hygiene. To minimize the risk of fungal diseases that love moisture under cover, be sure to cut all the leaves from the lower part of the bush.

Do you need to prune the rose heavily in autumn?

Too radical autumn pruning is a mistake. You should not shorten the shoots too much. It is better to postpone the main, shaping pruning until spring. In autumn, we only carry out a “sanitary cleaning”: we remove all weak, damaged, or diseased branches that can become a source of infection or simply will not survive the cold.

When is the ideal time for covering?

Remember the main rule: never cover roses too early! Many people rush as soon as the first night frosts hit, but this only harms the plant. If the air temperature is not yet stably frosty, the shoots can rot/become damp — die from excessive moisture and heat under the material.

The optimal time comes when you see stable night frosts in the range of -5 to -7 °C. It is this “minus” that will signal the rose to fall asleep and help it strengthen.

4 reliable ways to protect roses from the cold

For your bushes to successfully survive the winter, it is necessary to protect the most vulnerable parts: the root neck and the shoots themselves.

1. Classic hilling with soil or peat

This is the first and mandatory stage of protection. Pour a mound of dry soil or peat around the base of the bush, 20–30 cm high. This earthen hill will become a reliable shield for the root neck, protecting it from freezing. It is important that the soil is dry!

2. Creating an air layer: spruce branches or leaves

For additional protection of the shoots, you can use natural materials that provide an air layer. This is an ideal thermal insulator that prevents the plant from rotting/becoming damp.

  • Cover the shoots with spruce branches (coniferous branches) — they not only warm but also repel mice.
  • Use dry oak leaves. They are dense, retain heat well, and do not decompose as quickly.

3. Covering with breathable agrotextile

A modern and very effective method. You can simply wrap the bush with agrotextile (spunbond) or create a small frame around the plant and throw the material over it.

  • Key condition: the material must be breathable. If you use any film, it must have openings for ventilation. Never use polyethylene without holes, as moisture accumulates under it, which will lead to rot.

4. Arch shelters for tall and standard roses

If you have tall bushes or elegant standard roses, a more thorough approach is needed.

  1. Install metal or plastic arcs/arches, creating a frame over the plant.
  2. Cover this frame with double-layer agrotextile.
  3. Be sure to ensure that an air layer remains between the shelter and the plant. This is the same “thermos” principle that protects against sudden temperature changes and allows the plant to “breathe.”

Remember: successful wintering of roses is not about maximum warming, but about protection from moisture, freezing of the root neck, and rotting/becoming damp. Wait for real frosts, choose a breathable material, and in the spring your roses will thank you with lush and healthy flowering. It requires some effort, but true beauty is worth it!
