What to Do with Fallen Apples: Tips Most Gardeners Don’t Even Realize

Не спішіть викидати падалицю! Я розповім, як перетворити, здавалося б, зіпсований урожай на цінне добриво, що забезпечить здоров'я вашому саду та розкішний врожай наступного року.

Every garden owner is familiar with this phenomenon: a sudden gust of wind, a disease, or a pest — and a whole carpet of knocked-down apples, which gardeners call windfall, lies beneath the trees. Most of them are no longer suitable for consumption in their usual form. The eternal question arises: what to do with them? Collect and throw away, or perhaps leave them to rot under the tree? I have been tending my garden for many years and know that windfall is not trash, but a real, albeit capricious, treasure that can bring both benefits and harm if handled incorrectly.

We often follow the principle “nature will figure it out,” but in a modern, somewhat “cultivated” garden, this approach doesn’t work. Improperly disposed of or simply left alone, fallen apples can become a real breeding ground for infections and pests, jeopardizing your entire harvest. So, let’s figure out how to get the maximum benefit from these gifts of autumn with minimal effort, turning a “problem” into an effective and ecological fertilizer.

⚠️ Should you remove fallen apples: the categorical advice of agronomists

There is one iron rule here that is worth remembering forever: ignoring windfall is strictly forbidden! You shouldn’t even wonder if you can leave fallen apples under the apple tree — the answer is unequivocally negative.

Why? The remaining fruits very quickly become an ideal nutrient medium for the development of fungal infections and the reproduction of pests. Apples often fall due to damage by the codling moth — the gardener’s fiercest enemy. If infected fruits simply lie on the ground, the insects will quickly crawl onto healthy fruits on the branches and destroy them instantly. Don’t risk the health of your garden; removing fallen apples is not a whim, but a mandatory agrotechnical requirement.

🗑️ Should you discard rotten apples into the garden bed

If you decide not to throw away rotten apples but use them as fertilizer, this is quite possible and even beneficial for many plantings. Apples contain many useful substances.

Ways to use rotten apples as fertilizer

  1. Burying in the plot: You can bury the windfall in a separate area free of plantings. But be careful: to avoid the appearance of fruit flies (Drosophila), the layer of apples must be sprinkled with a fairly thick layer of soil — 10-15 cm. Simply leaving rotten fruits exposed is the worst idea.
  2. Using in compost: This is perhaps the most ecological and effective method. However, apples have high acidity, which can harm the compost. To prevent this, be sure to add ash or dolomite flour to the windfall. This will balance the pH level and allow the compost to “mature” properly.

🌱 How to properly bury apples in garden beds

Experienced gardeners know that some plants simply adore fertilizer made from rotten apples. These include, for example:

  • Gooseberries;
  • Raspberries;
  • Currants (Red and Black);
  • Other fruit trees.

Fertilizing berry bushes

To fertilize bushes with windfall, first sort it thoroughly. Then chop the fruits (you can just use a shovel). The next steps are:

  1. Make a furrow around the bush.
  2. Apply a layer of chopped apples.
  3. Cover it with a layer of humus and soil (the layer thickness should be about 15 cm).
  4. Be sure to mulch the bed on top with sawdust or straw — this will help retain moisture and prevent weed growth.

Fertilizing fruit trees

You should handle the fertilization of trees a little more carefully. It is strictly forbidden to use worm-eaten and severely rotten fruits here — this is a direct path to infection.

  1. Selected, but already inedible, apples should also be chopped with a shovel.
  2. Measure approximately 10 cm from the tree trunk — this will be the area for applying fertilizer.
  3. Bury the chopped fruits around the trunk at a depth of about 15 cm. This will ensure gradual nourishment of the root system.

Windfall is not just waste, but a free, ecological material that can become a powerful fertilizer for your garden. The main thing is not to be lazy, collect the fruits, and process them correctly. We can turn the risk of infection spread into a source of nutrients that will help your raspberries, gooseberries, and other trees bear even better fruit next season. Thus, you will not only tidy up your garden but also invest in the future harvest, acting in harmony with nature.
