This Mistake Makes Your Onions Rot: How to Keep Heads Juicy Until Spring Without Losses

Нерідко навіть ідеально зібраний урожай цибулі псується за кілька тижнів — дізнайтеся про єдину, але фатальну помилку, через яку ви втрачаєте запаси.

I’m sure you know this frustrating situation: it’s autumn, you’ve just harvested an excellent onion crop, carefully dried it, and seemingly done everything right. But a month or two later, you go into the pantry, and there is an unpleasant smell and half the heads are already soft or, worse yet, rotten. I admit, I used to throw away almost a quarter of my supplies until I figured out what exactly was going wrong.

In fact, the reason lies not in the quality of the harvest or the drying, but in one very common mistake that, unfortunately, even experienced householders make. If you want your onions to be preserved without problems until the next season, remaining firm, juicy, and crunchy, you should remember a few simple but critically important rules.

Why Onions Rot During Storage: The Main Enemy of Your Harvest

The key reason for spoilage is the neglect of optimal storage conditions. We often think that the main thing is dry onions, and that’s enough. But even perfectly dried onions will begin to spoil if you place them where it is too warm or, even worse, excessively humid.

As soon as the temperature in the storage area rises above +18°C and the humidity jumps past the 75% mark, you create an ideal “sanatorium” for bacteria and fungi. These very microorganisms are the direct culprits of rot, quickly turning healthy bulbs into a soft, spoiled mass. Thus, our main goal is to deny them any chance!

How to Properly Store Onions: Proven Steps

For onion heads to be stored for a long time without problems, you should create a truly comfortable environment for them. Here are a few rules that work flawlessly:

Optimal Microclimate — The Key to Success

What should be the ideal “climate” for long-term storage? Remember these numbers:

  • Temperature: from +1 to +5°C. Cold slows down all life processes and the development of microorganisms.
  • Humidity: 60–70%. This is the golden mean that will not let the onions dry out, but will not create a damp environment either.

Ensure Free Air Circulation

Never store onions in plastic bags or tight, non-ventilated containers! This is the shortest path to rot. Use only:

  • Nets or mesh bags;
  • Braided strings/wreaths (it’s both beautiful and practical);
  • Wooden boxes with ventilation slits.

Air must freely circulate around each head to wick away the moisture it naturally releases.

Bad Neighborhoods

One of the non-obvious but important nuances: do not place onions next to potatoes. Potatoes actively “breathe” during storage, releasing excess moisture. And we already know that moisture is the beginning of the end for onions. Keep these vegetables far away from each other.

Additional Protection Against Moisture

To be safe and further protect your onion reserves from moisture, experienced householders recommend using natural absorbents. You can layer the onions (in a box or container) with:

  • Salt (it perfectly absorbs excess moisture);
  • Sawdust (ordinary, non-coniferous, it will also help maintain dryness).

Stock Control: What to Do if You Notice a Problem

I advise you to make it a rule to conduct a “revision” of your reserves once a month. This will not take much time, but it will save you from the chain reaction of rotting.

  1. Remove the “Sick” Immediately: As soon as you find a soft, suspiciously damp, or beginning-to-rot head, remove it immediately from the healthy ones. One spoiled bulb can quickly infect its neighbors.
  2. Emergency Drying: If you notice only the first signs of dampness or softness, don’t panic. Lay out all the onions in a thin layer in a dry, well-ventilated area (you can even just leave them in a room for a few days) and allow them to dry thoroughly. This often stops the spoilage process.

Storing onions is not complex magic, but just strict adherence to temperature and humidity conditions. Your onions rot not because you are a bad householder, but because ideal conditions for bacteria are created in the storage. Control the temperature (+1–+5°C) and humidity (60–70%), ensure air circulation, and do not place onions next to potatoes. By following these simple steps, you will be confident that you will have firm and juicy heads until next spring.
